Cone Penetrometer Test
This
test is achieved by driving a cone with an automatic hammer
(140 lbs x 30 inch drop). Rods are marked at one foot intervals
and are added until desired depth or blow count is reached. This
test determines soil density and or pile type and length, to approximately
a 60 foot depth. The cone, driven by the auto hammer (having a
97% efficiency ), is directly comparable to the SPT values obtained
by a rope and cathead hammer which has been corrected to 60% energy
(60 % being the average for rope and cathead hammers).
At further
depths some rod friction should be realized varying with soil
conditions. It is suggested that when the Auto Hammer is used
to drive SPT’s the field value should also be corrected
by a factor of 97/60.
It is noteworthy
that where blow count (N value) is the prime purpose of the drilling,
the cone provides a quicker and more accurate rate of information
with a higher degree of repeatability than SPT sampling. |
